Frequently Asked Questions
Wind chill (or wind chill factor) is the perceived decrease in temperature felt by the body due to wind. Moving air accelerates heat loss from exposed skin. A 20°F day with 15 mph wind feels like 6°F on your skin.
The NWS formula: Wind Chill = 35.74 + 0.6215T - 35.75V^0.16 + 0.4275TV^0.16, where T is temperature (°F) and V is wind speed (mph). It's valid when temp ≤50°F and wind ≥3 mph.
Wind chill below 0°F poses frostbite risk within 30 minutes. Below -20°F: frostbite in 10-30 min. Below -35°F: frostbite in 5-10 min. Below -50°F: frostbite in under 5 minutes. Cover all exposed skin!
Wind chill only affects warm-blooded creatures. Objects cool to air temperature regardless of wind. A car won't get colder than the air temperature no matter how windy. Wind just helps objects reach air temperature faster.
Layer clothing with moisture-wicking base, insulating middle, wind-blocking outer. Cover extremities (hat, gloves, face mask). Limit exposure time. Stay dry - wet clothing increases heat loss dramatically.
