A popular hop bet strategy is "hopping all the 7s" - betting $1 on each 7 combination:
Total cost: $3. If any 7 hits, you win $15 and lose $2 on the other two = +$13 net. Probability: 6/36 = 16.67%. Still a -11.11% house edge overall.
A hop bet is a one-roll bet that a specific dice combination will appear on the next roll. For example, hopping 3-4 means betting the dice will show exactly a 3 and a 4 (in any order). These are proposition bets resolved in one roll.
Easy hop bets are on combinations with two different numbers (like 2-5), which can appear two ways. Hard hop bets are on doubles (like 3-3), which can only appear one way. Hard hops pay more (30:1) but are less likely than easy hops (15:1).
Standard hop bet house edges are 11.11% for easy hops (15:1 payout) and 13.89% for hard hops (30:1 payout). These are among the highest house edge bets in craps. True odds would be 17:1 and 35:1 respectively.
Hop bets are typically used by experienced players who believe the dice are "running" a certain way, or to protect other bets. For example, hopping all the 7s when you have money on the pass line during a come-out roll. However, they're mathematically poor bets.
Quick-start with common scenarios
Calculations follow the published mathematics of the game — combinatorics for cards, probability theory for dice, and expected-value accounting for wagers. Results are verified against independent references (primarily Wizard of Odds). No calculation here is an opinion or recommendation; it is arithmetic applied to the rules of the game.
