Background removal is the process of separating a subject from its background in an image. Our free online tool uses AI (machine learning) running entirely in your browser via WebAssembly to automatically detect and remove backgrounds. The result is a transparent PNG you can use on any background. No images are uploaded to a server — all processing happens locally on your device.
No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your images never leave your device — nothing is uploaded, stored, or seen by anyone. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.
The first time you use the tool, your browser needs to download the AI model (roughly 40–90 MB depending on the quality setting). After that, the model is cached by your browser so subsequent uses start almost instantly.
Fast is the quickest option and works well for simple subjects with clean backgrounds. Balanced (the default) offers a good mix of speed and accuracy — it handles most photos well including people, products, and animals. Best gives the finest edge detail for complex subjects like hair or fur, but takes longer and uses more memory.
Try increasing the Feather slider in Advanced Settings to soften the edges. If the mask is cutting into your subject or leaving background fringe, adjust the Edge Shift slider — negative values shrink the mask inward and positive values expand it outward. For the best edge quality on hair or detailed subjects, switch to the Best model.
You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, GIF, AVIF, and TIFF images. For output, you can download as PNG (with transparency), WebP, or JPEG. Note that JPEG does not support transparency — if you choose JPEG, the transparent area will be white unless you set a solid background color.
Yes. You can drop or select multiple images and they will each appear as a separate entry. Each image gets its own settings, so you can adjust the model, feather, and edge shift independently. Use the "Download All" button to save them all at once as a ZIP file.
After removing the background, open Advanced Settings and toggle "Solid background color" on. Pick any color using the color picker. The transparent area will be filled with your chosen color in the downloaded file.
The maximum file size is 50 MB. There is no hard resolution limit, but very large images (above ~4000×4000 pixels) may be slow or run out of memory on devices with limited RAM, especially phones. If processing fails on a large image, try the Fast model or resize the image first.
The AI works best when there is clear contrast between the subject and background. If parts of your subject are similar in color to the background, the model may misclassify them. Try switching to the Best model for better accuracy, or adjust the Mask Contrast slider to sharpen the boundary between foreground and background.
Yes, it works on any modern browser with WebAssembly support, including Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android. Processing will be slower on mobile devices compared to a desktop or laptop. For best results on mobile, use the Fast or Balanced model and avoid very high-resolution images.
