Swipe on touch screens or press the arrow keys to slide every tile at once
Matching numbers merge into their double — 2+2 makes 4, 4+4 makes 8
Keep your biggest tile anchored in one corner and build a chain toward it
Create the 2048 tile to win, keep playing for 4096+, or undo a bad move

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you play 2048?
Every move slides all tiles as far as they can go in one direction. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile of double the value. After every successful move a new 2 (90% chance) or 4 (10% chance) appears on a random empty square. Build big numbers in one corner and merge upward toward 2048.
What are the controls?
Use the arrow keys (up, down, left, right) on desktop, or swipe anywhere on the board on phones and tablets. There is also an Undo button that reverts your last move — including a move that ended the game — so you can escape a mistake once per turn.
What happens when I reach 2048?
You win! A celebration banner appears and you can keep playing the same board to chase 4096, 8192, and beyond. If you run out of moves before then, the game is over — though a single Undo can bring the board back if you just made a mistake.
What is the best 2048 strategy?
Pick one corner and never move your biggest tile out of it — most players lock large tiles bottom-left and only swipe left, down, and right. Keep your lowest-value tiles on the moving edges, build an ascending chain toward the corner, and think one merge ahead before swiping.
Why did those two tiles not merge?
Each tile can merge only once per move — this matches the original game exactly. A row of 2-2-2-2 becomes 4-4 (not 8), and a newly formed tile never merges again in the same move. If nothing changed after your swipe, that move is cancelled and no new tile spawns.
Is my score saved?
Your best score is stored in your browser with localStorage and persists across sessions on the same device. The game is fully client-side: nothing is uploaded, and there is no account or sign-up.
