Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Minesweeper?

Click any square to reveal it. Numbers tell you how many of the eight surrounding squares hide a mine; empty squares auto-expand to reveal their neighbors. Use the numbers to deduce where mines must be, flag them, and reveal every safe square to win. Your very first click is always safe — mines are only placed after it, never on or next to your starting square.

What are the controls?

Left-click (or tap) reveals a square. Right-click places or removes a flag on desktop; on phones and tablets, press and hold a square for about half a second to flag it. The flag button counter shows how many mines remain unflagged.

What do the difficulty levels mean?

Beginner is the classic 9×9 grid with 10 mines, Intermediate is 16×16 with 40 mines, and Expert is the full 30×16 board with 99 mines — the same three presets as the original Windows game. On narrow screens the Expert board scrolls horizontally.

What is a good Minesweeper strategy?

Start anywhere — the first click is safe and usually opens a large area. Clear obvious counts first: a "1" touching exactly one hidden square means that square is a mine; once flagged, the squares around it become safe to click. Work from known information outward, avoid 50/50 guesses until forced, and flag only when it helps you deduce — unnecessary flags cost time.

Are my best times saved?

Yes. Your fastest completion for each difficulty is stored in your browser with localStorage, separate for Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert. Everything stays on your device — the game is fully client-side with no server and no sign-up.
