Quick Answer
Tic tac toe is a paper-and-pencil classic played on a 3×3 grid: take turns placing X and O, and the first player to line up three marks in a row, column or diagonal wins. Our free online version lets you play against an unbeatable computer or share the board with a friend in two-player mode, with win-line highlights and a running score tally. Every game runs instantly in your browser — no downloads, no sign-up.
How It Works
Choose vs Computer or 2 Players; in computer mode pick whether you play as X or O
Click or tap an empty square — or arrow-key to it and press Enter — to place your mark
Line up three in a row, column or diagonal to win; the winning line lights up
The score tally tracks X wins, O wins and draws across rounds and visits
Try to beat the minimax computer — a draw is the best anyone can manage
Use New round for an instant rematch or Reset score to zero the tally

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you beat the computer at tic tac toe?
No — and that is by design. The computer uses the minimax algorithm to look ahead through every possible continuation of the game, so it plays perfectly. The best result you can achieve against it is a draw. If you want a winnable match, switch to two-player mode and challenge a friend.
What is the best strategy in tic tac toe?
Open with the center if you can — it appears in four of the eight winning lines. Otherwise take a corner. From there, look for forks: two simultaneous threats that your opponent can only block one of. Always respond to an opponent fork by forcing them to defend elsewhere, and block any line where they already hold two marks.
What are the controls?
Click or tap any empty square to place your mark. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys to move between squares and press Enter to place — arrow keys are captured by the board so the page will not scroll while you play. New round clears the board instantly and Reset score zeroes the tally.
Can two players play on the same device?
Yes. Switch the mode selector to 2 Players and the board becomes a local pass-and-play match — X and O alternate turns on the same screen, and the score tally tracks X wins, O wins and draws between games.
Is this tic tac toe free and private?
Completely free with no sign-up, and 100% private: the game, the computer opponent and your score tally all live in your browser. Nothing you play is ever sent to a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
