Build columns down in alternating colors; stack aces upward by suit on the foundations. Click a card to auto-move it, drag cards or runs between columns, or tap card-then-pile on touch. Long runs move automatically as far as your free cells and empty columns allow.

Quick Answer

FreeCell is the open solitaire card game where all 52 cards are dealt face-up across eight columns and every deal is winnable with perfect play. Park cards in the four free cells, build columns down in alternating colors, and stack each suit from ace to king on the foundations. Our free version includes click-to-auto-move, drag and drop, unlimited undo, hints, auto-save, and win stats — no download, no sign-up.

How It Works

1

Scan the face-up columns and send aces and other foundation-ready cards up by suit

2

Build columns downward in alternating colors; park single cards in the four free cells to untangle

3

Move whole runs between columns — supermove capacity grows with each open cell and empty column

4

Finish all four foundations from ace to king to win; undo is unlimited if a plan goes wrong

Key Facts

  • All 52 cards dealt face-up: 8 columns of 7/7/7/7/6/6/6/6 — nothing hidden

  • Supermoves let you shift whole runs — capacity grows with open cells and empty columns
  • Nearly every deal is winnable: FreeCell is a game of skill, not luck
  • Includes the classic numbered Microsoft deals — game #1 and beyond
  • Click a card to auto-move it, drag runs, or tap card-then-pile on touch
  • Unlimited undo with a full move history
  • Auto-save, timer, move counter, and local win stats

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play FreeCell?

All 52 cards are dealt face-up into eight columns. You build tableau columns downward in alternating colors (a red 6 goes on a black 7) and send aces upward by suit to the four foundations, followed by twos, threes, and so on to kings. Any single card can be parked in one of the four free cells, and you win when all four foundations are complete. Unlike most solitaire games, cards are never hidden, so success depends on planning rather than luck.

How do supermoves work?

A supermove shifts an entire descending run at once, as if you had moved it card-by-card through the free spaces. The common approximation caps the run length at (open free cells + 1) × (empty columns + 1), not counting the destination column itself when it is empty — so with 4 open cells and no empty columns you can move 5 sequential cards in one action. The mathematically exact limit is higher — (free + 1) × 2^empty — but the approximation used here matches what most implementations, including the classic Windows FreeCell, enforce in practice.

Is every FreeCell game winnable?

Almost. Of the 1,000,000 classic Microsoft-numbered deals, game #11982 is the famous unwinnable one, and a handful of others are extremely difficult. Because every card starts face-up, no deal is ever blocked by hidden information — with enough planning (and unlimited undo) nearly any position can be recovered, which is why FreeCell is considered the purest skill-based solitaire.

What are the controls?

Click (or tap) any card to auto-move it to the best legal spot — foundations first. To play manually, drag a card or an entire descending run to its destination. On touch screens you can also tap a card to select it and then tap the column, free cell, or foundation you want. Undo is unlimited.

Is my game saved if I close the page?

Yes. Your game state and timer are saved to your device with localStorage after every move, and the game resumes exactly where you left off. Your win count and best time are kept locally too. Everything is 100% client-side — no account, no server, no sign-up.
