Common questions about poker ranges
A hand range is the complete set of hands you might hold or your opponent might hold in a specific situation. Instead of putting someone on one exact hand, we think in ranges. For example, a tight player's UTG open range might be AA-TT, AKs-ATs, AKo-AQo, KQs.
Pocket pairs have 6 combos (4 suits, choose 2 = 4C2 = 6). Suited hands have 4 combos (one per suit). Offsuit hands have 12 combos (4 suits × 3 suits = 12). Blockers reduce combos: if you hold an Ace, AA only has 3 combos left.
Top X% refers to the strongest X% of all possible starting hands by equity. Top 10% (~133 combos) includes premium pairs and broadways. Top 20% adds more pairs and suited connectors. The wider your range, the more hands you're playing.
Earlier positions require tighter ranges because more players can wake up with a hand behind you. UTG might play top 10-12%, while the button can play 35-50%. Blinds defend wide due to already having money invested.
Range advantage means your range contains more strong hands on a given board than your opponent's range. On A-K-7 rainbow, the preflop raiser has range advantage with all the AK, AA, KK. This affects betting strategy.
