A quinella requires picking the first two finishers in either order. Box formula: n × (n-1) ÷ 2. A $2 quinella box with 4 horses costs (4×3÷2) = 6 combinations × $2 = $12. Quinellas are easier to hit than exactas since order doesn't matter.
| Horses | Combinations | $1 Cost | $2 Cost | $5 Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 horses | 1 | $1 | $2 | $5 |
| 3 horses | 3 | $3 | $6 | $15 |
| 4 horses | 6 | $6 | $12 | $30 |
| 5 horses | 10 | $10 | $20 | $50 |
| 6 horses | 15 | $15 | $30 | $75 |
| 7 horses | 21 | $21 | $42 | $105 |
| 8 horses | 28 | $28 | $56 | $140 |
A quinella bet requires you to pick the first two finishers in either order. If you bet $2 on horses 3 and 7, you win if they finish 1st and 2nd in any order (3-7 or 7-3).
Quinella box cost = n × (n-1) ÷ 2 × stake, where n is the number of horses. For example, a $2 box with 4 horses: (4 × 3 ÷ 2) = 6 combinations × $2 = $12.
An exacta requires the exact order of finish (1st then 2nd), while a quinella wins with either order. Quinellas are easier to hit but typically pay less. An exacta box on 2 horses costs 2× stake; a quinella costs 1× stake.
Not all tracks offer quinellas. Many US tracks have replaced them with exactas. Quinellas remain popular in Australia, UK, and some US tracks. Check your track's bet menu before wagering.
Bet quinellas when you're confident two horses will finish top 2 but unsure of the order. If you have a strong opinion on the order, an exacta may offer better value. Compare payoffs - sometimes boxing an exacta pays more than a quinella.
