Quick Answer
An expense splitter tracks who paid for what in a group, works out each person’s fair share, and tells you the smallest set of payments that settles everyone up. Add the people and expenses (split equally, by exact amounts, or by percentages) and this free calculator shows each person’s balance plus a settle-up plan like “Alex pays Sam $43.20” — all computed in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and no account is required.
How It Works
Add people: type each name and press Add — you need at least two before expenses unlock
Add expenses: enter a description, the amount, who paid, and tick who it is split among — equally, by exact custom amounts, or by percentages (both validated to the cent)
Review balances: every person’s paid vs fair share, plus a net balance card showing who is owed and who owes
Settle up: follow the minimum-payment plan (for example, “Alex pays Sam $43.20”), export the table as CSV, or import a CSV back — everything is saved in your browser automatically
Key Facts
- Add unlimited people and expenses — equal splits, exact custom amounts, or percentage splits
- Custom amounts and percentages are validated so every expense adds up to the cent
- Balances show who is owed money and who owes, per person
- Settle-up plan uses a greedy minimum-cash-flow algorithm to produce the fewest transfers
- Amounts are stored in cents, so totals always match exactly — no floating-point rounding surprises
- Save and restore your group automatically in this browser (localStorage), with a one-click Clear all
- Export the expense table to CSV and import it back (or bring a CSV from another tool)
- Free with no account, no limits, and no uploads — everything stays on your device
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the settle-up math work?
Every expense is converted into per-person shares (in integer cents, so nothing drifts), then each person’s balance is computed as what they paid minus their fair share. Positive balances are creditors, negative ones are debtors. The settle-up plan then repeatedly matches the largest debtor with the largest creditor and transfers the smaller of the two amounts — a greedy minimum-cash-flow algorithm that clears every balance in at most max(debtors, creditors) payments instead of everyone paying everyone.
Is this expense splitter free?
Completely free and unlimited — no account, no trial, no watermarks. People and expenses live in your browser’s localStorage, so you can split as many trips and groups as you like. Paid rivals like SplitMyExpenses Premium ($3.99/month) charge for exactly this settle-up math.
Is my data private?
Yes. The splitter runs entirely in your browser with client-side JavaScript. Expenses are never uploaded, logged, or shared — they are only saved to this browser’s localStorage so your group survives a refresh. You can wipe everything at any time with Clear all, or use the tool offline after the page loads.
Does it need an account or app install?
No. There is nothing to sign up for, install, or connect. Open the page, add names, and start entering expenses — the settle-up plan updates live. Share the URL with friends and each person can paste the same expenses (or import the CSV export) to see identical results.
Can I split an expense unequally, like when one person skipped dinner?
Yes, three ways. Uncheck anyone who should not be part of an expense, use exact custom amounts (e.g. someone’s upgraded meal), or enter percentages — both custom and percentage modes validate that the split adds up to the expense total before it is saved, with a clear error if it does not.
