Quick Answer

A personal kanban board organizes work as cards that move across lists — typically To do, Doing, and Done — so you can see the state of every task at a glance. This free tool gives you drag-and-drop cards, labels, due dates, search, and multiple boards, and it saves every change to your browser’s IndexedDB automatically. It runs entirely in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and no account is required.

How It Works

1

Start with the default board — it opens with To do, Doing, and Done lists; create more boards or lists whenever you need them

2

Add cards for each task — click Add card in a list, then click the card to add a description, a label, and a due date

3

Drag cards as work moves — from To do to Doing to Done; reorder within a list, move across lists, or drag a list header handle to reorder lists

4

Search and scan — type in the search box to dim cards that do not match; due-date pills flag overdue, due today, and upcoming

5

Back up or move — every change saves to this browser automatically; export all boards as JSON or import a backup after confirming the summary

Key Facts

  • Multiple boards with a switcher — create, rename, or delete boards behind a confirm step
  • Drag cards within a list and across lists; reorder whole lists by their header drag handle
  • Click a card to edit its title, description, label, and due date inline
  • Five labels (Design, Dev, Writing, Admin, Personal) shown as quiet color dots
  • Due-date pills flag overdue, due-today, and upcoming cards
  • Search dims cards that do not match by title or description, so drag positions stay stable
  • Every change saves automatically to IndexedDB in this browser — there is no save button
  • Export all boards as JSON, copy the JSON to the clipboard, or import a validated backup
  • Free with no account and no uploads — runs 100% in the browser

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a personal kanban board?

Kanban is a way of visualizing work as cards that move across a small number of lists — most simply To do, Doing, and Done. Each card is one task; where the card sits tells you the state of the work without reading a list of checkboxes. A personal kanban applies this to one person’s tasks: you keep a backlog in To do, pull a few cards into Doing, and drag them to Done as they finish, which keeps work in progress visible and limited.

Where are my boards stored?

In this browser’s IndexedDB, under the database name pwt-personal-kanban. Boards survive refreshes and browser restarts on this device. They are not synced to a server or to other devices — to move them, use Export JSON and import the file in the other browser. Clearing this site’s browser data removes the boards.

Is this kanban board free?

Yes, completely free with no account, no trial, and no card limits. Hosted kanban products like Trello also have a free tier but require an account and store your boards on their servers, with paid plans for automation and larger teams. This tool is a single page that keeps everything local, which is why it can stay free and private.

Is my data private?

Yes. The board runs entirely in your browser with client-side JavaScript and makes no network calls — cards, lists, and boards are never uploaded, logged, or shared. Everything is written only to this browser’s IndexedDB, and you can wipe it at any time by deleting your boards or clearing site data.

How does the drag and drop work?

Dragging uses the browser’s pointer events via the @hello-pangea/dnd library, with mouse, touch, and keyboard support. Grab a card to reorder it within its list or drop it on another list to move it; dropping outside any list cancels the move. The handle at the left of a list header drags the whole list to a new position. While you search, non-matching cards are dimmed but keep their positions, so drops land where they appear to land.

Can I back up or move my boards?

Yes. Export JSON downloads every board as a pretty-printed file, and Copy JSON puts the same payload on your clipboard. Import JSON reads a file exported from this tool, validates its shape (malformed boards, lists, and cards are rejected or dropped), shows a summary of what it found, and only replaces your current boards after you confirm.
