Free browser tools that respect your files — everything runs locally, nothing is uploaded.

File Decompressor

Decompress your .zip, .gz, .zst, .brotli, .7z-ultra, .7z, or .rar files back to their original format. All processing happens directly in your browser - no data is sent to any server.

By Joseph OrdunaHow this works

Quick Answer

File decompression extracts files from compressed archives like ZIP, 7z, RAR, or TAR.GZ. To decompress files, upload the archive, select files to extract, and download. The original files are restored to their full size. Our tool supports multiple archive formats and processes files locally in your browser.

Key Features

  • ZIP, 7z, RAR, TAR, and GZIP are common compression formats
  • Decompression restores files to their original size and format
  • Password-protected archives require the password to extract
  • Browser-based decompression processes files locally without server uploads
  • Windows Explorer can extract ZIP files natively
  • 7-Zip and WinRAR are popular desktop decompression tools
  • TAR.GZ is commonly used for Linux/Unix software distribution

How this conversion works

ZIP, 7z, RAR, TAR, and gzip archives are decompressed in-browser. Output files stream to your Downloads folder as they are extracted.

What this tool can’t do

  • Extremely large files are bounded by your device memory, not by server capacity. A very low-memory tablet may fail to load a 4K video where a desktop completes in seconds.
  • WebAssembly codec support lags slightly behind native desktop tools. For obscure or experimental codecs, a native tool (like desktop FFmpeg) is still the right choice.

When to consult a professional

If you need batch-processing millions of files, a server-side pipeline will outperform per-user browser conversion. For DRM-protected media, a legitimate licensed reader is required.
