Frequently Asked Questions
What is OpenPanzer?
OpenPanzer is a rewrite of Panzer General II in plain JavaScript and HTML5 by Nicu Pavel — no engine, no plugins. It recreates the classic SSI wargame’s systems (hexes, unit stats, prestige, campaigns with carry-over core units) and extends them with quality-of-life features and a scenario editor. It is GPL-licensed open source.
Which campaigns can I play?
The classic theatre campaigns are included — the 1939–45 Axis and Allied campaigns from the original games — along with standalone scenarios and community-built ones. The built-in editor also lets you create your own battles.
Does my campaign progress save?
Yes. OpenPanzer explicitly saves game state to HTML5 local storage — your browser, your device. Finish a scenario, close the tab, and your core army is waiting when you return.
Is it good for newcomers to wargames?
Panzer General II was always the friendliest face of hex wargaming, and OpenPanzer preserves that: simple rules (attack things, take objectives), forgiving difficulty at lower settings, and a UI that explains unit stats on hover. It is one of the best first wargames ever made.
