Frequently Asked Questions

What is Whatajong?

Whatajong is an open-source mahjong solitaire game built with TypeScript in the early 2010s and still playable today. It implements the classic rules: tiles are stacked in layered layouts, and you can only remove tiles that are free — unblocked on the left or right and uncovered — by matching them with an identical partner. It is MIT-licensed.

Is it the same as your Mahjong Solitaire game?

Same genre, different games. Our own Mahjong Solitaire (also on this site) is our implementation with hints and multiple layouts; Whatajong is an independent open-source project embedded from its official site. Playing both is the point — they feel different.

Can every board be won?

Not every random deal is solvable — that is true of mahjong solitaire generally. Whatajong lets you shuffle the remaining tiles when a board dead-ends, so you can keep playing a hand you like rather than restarting from scratch.

Does it work on touch devices?

Yes. Tile selection is simple taps, making this one of the embeds that plays perfectly well on tablets and phones.
