To calculate PPI (Pixels Per Inch), use the formula: PPI = sqrt(width^2 + height^2) / diagonal. For example, a 1920x1080 display at 24 inches has a diagonal of sqrt(1920^2 + 1080^2) = 2203 pixels, so PPI = 2203 / 24 = 92 PPI. Higher PPI means sharper images. Apple's 'Retina' standard is typically 300+ PPI for phones, 220+ for tablets, and 110+ for laptops at normal viewing distances.
PPI (Pixels Per Inch) is a measurement of pixel density that indicates how many pixels are packed into one inch of screen space. It determines how sharp and detailed images appear on a display. Higher PPI values result in smoother text, sharper images, and less visible pixelation. PPI is calculated using the screen's resolution (width x height in pixels) and its physical diagonal size in inches.
PPI (Pixels Per Inch) measures how many pixels are packed into one inch of screen space. It's calculated using the formula: PPI = sqrt(width^2 + height^2) / diagonal. The numerator gives you the diagonal resolution in pixels, and dividing by the physical diagonal gives pixels per inch. Higher PPI means sharper, more detailed images.
For desktop monitors at typical viewing distances (20-28 inches), 90-110 PPI is standard for everyday use. HiDPI/Retina quality starts around 140-160 PPI. A 27" 4K monitor has approximately 163 PPI, which provides excellent sharpness. For content creation and design work, higher PPI (140+) is recommended.
PPI (Pixels Per Inch) refers to screen display density - how many pixels per inch on a digital display. DPI (Dots Per Inch) traditionally refers to print resolution - how many ink dots per inch a printer can produce. For screens, PPI and DPI are effectively interchangeable. For printing, 300 DPI is the standard for photo-quality output.
Apple's "Retina" standard means pixels are indistinguishable to the human eye at typical viewing distance. This varies by device: iPhones need ~460 PPI (viewed at 10-12 inches), iPads need ~264 PPI (15 inches), and MacBooks need ~220 PPI (18-20 inches). The key is that viewing distance affects perceived sharpness.
For the same resolution, smaller screens have higher PPI because the same number of pixels are packed into less space. A 1080p 24" monitor has 92 PPI, while a 1080p 15.6" laptop has 141 PPI. This is why larger screens (TVs, large monitors) need 4K or higher resolution to maintain sharpness.
Dot pitch is the physical distance between the centers of adjacent pixels, measured in millimeters. It's calculated as 25.4 / PPI. A lower dot pitch means smaller, more tightly packed pixels, resulting in a sharper image. Typical values range from 0.1mm (high-end phones) to 0.3mm (standard monitors).
To find the resolution needed for a target PPI at a given screen size: First calculate diagonal pixels (PPI x diagonal inches), then use the aspect ratio to find width and height. For example, for 163 PPI on a 27" 16:9 display: diagonal_px = 163 x 27 = 4401, which gives approximately 3840 x 2160 (4K).
For printing, 300 DPI is the gold standard for photo-quality output. At this density, individual dots are invisible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance. For large format prints viewed from farther away, 150 DPI is often acceptable. Web images typically use 72 PPI since screens have lower density than print.
