That target isn't reachable: you'd need a 110.0% on the final — above 100%.

The highest grade you can finish with is 88.0% (B+) — even with a perfect final. Try a lower target: a 88% goal is the most you can lock in.

How the final grade formula works

Your final course grade is a weighted average: everything you've done so far counts for (100% − final weight) and the final exam counts for its weight. Solving that equation for the exam score gives:

Needed final score = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight

Two worked examples:

  • Current 85%, final worth 20%, target 80%: (80 − 85 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = (80 − 68) ÷ 0.20 = 60% needed.
  • Current 85%, final worth 20%, target 90%: (90 − 68) ÷ 0.20 = 110% — above 100%, so a 90 isn't mathematically reachable; the ceiling is a 88% (A−) with a perfect final.

For the weighted-category mode, your current standing is simply Σ (weight × score) ÷ 100 across categories — the same math as our weighted average calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my final grade with weights?▾
Multiply each category's average by its weight and add the results: Σ (weight × score) ÷ 100. For example, Homework 30% × 92% + Quizzes 20% × 85% + Midterm 50% × 88% = 27.6 + 17 + 44 = 88.6%. Enter those rows in the weighted categories tab to get this instantly, with validation that your weights sum to 100%.
What do I need on my final to keep my grade?▾
Use the formula (Target − Current × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. With an 85% current grade and a final worth 20%, keeping an 80% (B) needs just a 60% on the final; reaching a 90% (A−) would need 110%, which is impossible — the highest finish is 88% with a perfect final.
What happens if the needed score is over 100%?▾
The calculator tells you the target is unreachable: no exam score can lift your weighted average that high. Your best move is a realistic target — try the highest whole-number grade at or below your perfect-final ceiling — or ask your instructor about extra credit before the exam.
What if the needed score is 0% or less?▾
Congratulations — you've already secured the target. Even a zero on the final leaves your weighted average at or above it. The calculator shows both the zero-final and perfect-final outcomes so you know your full range.
Why do my category weights need to add up to 100%?▾
Weights represent each category's share of the whole course grade, so they must total 100%. If your syllabus lists a final exam as one of the categories, either include it as a row or leave it out and use the first tab to solve for the score you need in it.
How much can a final exam change my grade?▾
By at most its own weight: a final worth 20% can move your overall grade up to 20 percentage points (from a 0 to a 100 on the exam). That's why a low-weight final rarely rescues a low grade, while a 40–50% final can.
