Convert PDF to MD online — free and private

This free PDF to Markdown converter extracts the text layer of your document and rebuilds it as clean .md. Because the conversion runs on font size, glyph and x-position metadata — not just raw characters — it recovers structure most plain-text extractors lose: # headings, - list items, pipe tables and fenced code blocks.

Everything happens locally with pdf.js in your browser. Your file is never uploaded to a server, which makes it safe for contracts, financial statements, medical records and other sensitive documents.

Obsidian users: drop a report or paper in, download the .md, and move it into your vault — headings become outline entries and tables stay tables.

How the conversion works

Each page's text is grouped into lines from x/y coordinates, then:

  • Lines set ≥70% larger than the page's median font size become # headings (≥40% becomes ##, short ≥15% lines ###).
  • Leading bullet glyphs (•, ▪, ·) and 1.-style numbering become Markdown list items.
  • Consecutive lines whose items share ≥2 aligned x-column positions are emitted as pipe tables.
  • Runs of monospace-font text (Courier, Consolas…) become fenced code blocks.
  • Remaining lines are reflowed into paragraphs; page breaks can be kept as ---.

Scanned PDFs contain no text layer — run them through OCR first, then convert here.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to Markdown?
Drop your PDF into the box above. The text layer is extracted in your browser, headings are inferred from font size, bullets become list items, aligned columns become tables and monospace runs become code blocks. Copy the result or download it as a .md file.
Is this PDF to Markdown converter free?
Yes — completely free and unlimited, with no signup, no watermark and no page limit. There is no server-side processing: your PDF is parsed by your own browser.
Is it good for Obsidian?
Very. The output is plain .md with heading structure, so imported notes show up in Obsidian's outline pane and link naturally with the rest of your vault.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
No — a scan is an image without a text layer. OCR it first, then convert the result.
Do tables survive the conversion?
Simple aligned tables convert to Markdown pipe tables. Complex merged-cell or nested layouts may flatten — always review table-heavy financial documents.
