To predict a child's adult height: add mother's and father's heights, add 5 inches for boys or subtract 5 inches for girls, divide by 2. This mid-parental height method gives a rough estimate within 4 inches. Example: Mom 5'4" (64") + Dad 5'10" (70") = 134", for a boy: (134+5)/2 = 69.5" (5'9.5"). Genetics, nutrition, and health also affect final height.
1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 foot = 12 inches = 30.48 cm, 1 meter = 100 cm. To convert feet/inches to cm: (feet × 30.48) + (inches × 2.54). For example, 5'10" = (5 × 30.48) + (10 × 2.54) = 177.8 cm.
The mid-parental height method predicts adult height within ±8.5 cm (3.3 inches) for about 95% of children. Actual height depends on many factors including nutrition, health, and genetics beyond just parental height.
Height percentile indicates what percentage of the population is shorter than you. At the 75th percentile, you're taller than 75% of people. The 50th percentile is average. Percentiles vary by age and gender.
Global averages vary by country. In the US: men average 5'9" (175 cm), women average 5'4" (163 cm). Netherlands has the tallest average: men 6'0" (183 cm), women 5'7" (170 cm). Averages have increased over the past century.
Most people stop growing between ages 16-18 (girls) or 18-21 (boys). Growth plates in bones close after puberty ends. Factors affecting growth include genetics, nutrition, sleep, and hormones.
