Frequently Asked Questions
Subtract your start time from your end time, then subtract any break time. For example, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch = 8 hours worked (8.5 hours minus 0.5 hour break).
Overtime is typically hours worked beyond 8 hours/day or 40 hours/week, depending on your location's laws. In the US, federal law requires 1.5x pay for hours over 40/week. Some states require daily overtime after 8 hours.
Divide minutes by 60. For 7 hours 45 minutes: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7:45 = 7.75 hours. Common conversions: 15 min = 0.25, 30 min = 0.5, 45 min = 0.75.
If your end time is earlier than your start time (e.g., 10 PM to 6 AM), the calculator automatically adds 24 hours to the end time. The result shows 8 hours worked.
Many employers round to the nearest 15 minutes (7-minute rule: round down for 1-7 minutes, round up for 8-14). Check your company policy. This calculator shows exact time but you can round manually.
